Introduction
Proper new computer setup and regular maintenance significantly affect computer performance, longevity, and user experience. In this article, I present practical things you should do with a new computer and for regular maintenance.
User Account Setup is the first thing you should do. Ensure you have a strong password. You may also consider setting up other means of authentication, such as a PIN, fingerprint, face recognition, etc.
Updates and Bloatware
The next thing you should do is install Windows, hardware, and application updates. After your computer is updated, spend some time to uninstall any unnecessary bloatware (pre-installed programs you do not need or want).
Software Installation
It is time to install the software you plan to use, e.g., Microsoft Office products, video editors, etc. Don’t forget cyber security applications, e.g., Bit Defender or Windows Defender. Also, connect your printers and other peripherals and install the associated software and drivers.
Plan Your Backups
Set up a backup system and schedule to protect your files. Use a third-party solution or Windows Defender, which is built into Windows.
Personalization & Security
Take the time to go through Windows personalization, privacy, gaming, security, and system settings to fine-tune to your preferences. This includes backgrounds, color modes, lock screen timeouts, and more. This is a good time to create recovery media for your system.
Regular Maintenance
Keep the operating system, installed applications, hardware drivers, system firmware, and malware protection updated. Maintain regular file and disk backups.
Clean Up Your Storage
Ensure you keep your storage organized and uncluttered by uninstalling unwanted programs and deleting unwanted files as time passes.
Keep Your Hardware Clean
An often neglected activity of computer users is periodically cleaning the outside and inside of the computer and peripheral cases. Once a year or so, clean the inside of the computer case. This will help protect against dust, dirt, and overheating.
Educate Yourself About Cyber Security
The first level of defense for your computer system is you. Remain aware of cyber threats and ways to protect yourself.
